Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders are characterized by the presence of pain and tenderness in a person’s jawbone and inside the muscles that are used to control the jaw. TMJ disorders can be caused by genetics, arthritis, oral injury and excessively clenching or grinding one’s teeth. In many situations, TMJ disorders are a temporary problem that can be addressed using non-surgical treatment methods.
The experts at All About Smiles will check your jaw for TMJ. Some of the methods we use will include:
- Listening to and feeling the jawbone as it moves
- Measuring the jaw’s range of motion
- Identifying areas of discomfort on or around the jaw
Sometimes, the pain associated with a TMJ disorder will disappear on its own over time. In more severe cases, medical intervention may be required in order to alleviate discomfort. If we determine that you are indeed suffering from a TMJ disorder, it is likely that you will be prescribed one or more of the following treatment methods:
- Pain Medication
- Muscle Relaxants
- Physical Therapy
- Mouth Guards
