Halitosis Treatment

Halitosis, which is more commonly known as bad breath, is an oral health issue experienced by millions of people. Most cases of halitosis are caused by bacteria that has become trapped inside a person’s mouth for a long period of time. Such odor-causing bacteria can usually be found on a person’s tongue, between their teeth, and below their gum line.

Many people suffering from chronic halitosis attempt to treat the issue themselves using gum, mints or mouth rinses. Unfortunately, these remedies only cover up the smell, and they do nothing to address the real cause. The team at All About Smiles works to eliminate the unpleasant smell associated with halitosis, while also uncovering the true cause of the problem and putting a stop to the condition.

When treating chronic halitosis, we typically start with a professional teeth cleaning. This treatment consists of a deep cleanse of the entire mouth, and it is designed to eliminate any oral bacteria that is present. In many cases, this can cure halitosis and provide the patient with a sense of freshness for many months to come. We also remove bacteria from the patient’s tongue by conducting a tongue scraping procedure.

Chronic halitosis can also be caused by periodontitis, a condition better known as gum disease. All About Smiles offers treatments for this condition that involves eliminating bacteria found deep within the spaces between a patient’s teeth and below their gum line. In many cases, treating periodontitis can cure a patient’s chronic halitosis. Because periodontitis can quickly lead to more serious oral health problems, patients are advised to seek treatment for gum disease as soon as possible.

One of the best methods for preventing halitosis is to maintain proper oral hygiene practices at all times. This includes brushing at least twice a day, flossing, and receiving regular dental checkups twice every year. Our experts also review proper brushing and flossing techniques with any patient who is experiencing halitosis.

In rare cases, chronic halitosis may be caused by a more serious medical problem. If this is indeed the case, we will direct the patient to a more appropriate specialist for proper treatment.

If you are suffering from halitosis and you want to put a stop to the problem once and for all, please call us at (479) 431-5083 to schedule an appointment.
